OpenBeast: Hello Bernadette, nice to welcome you on OpenBeast! Would you please say a few words about yourself for those who don’t know you?
Thank you very much. Do you go by Beast or Open Beast :)
I am a woman on a journey to find my true self, with all of the giddiness, passion and spirit of the young girl I once was; and on a mission to help others do the same. I am a middle child of twelve siblings from parents who were happily married for over fifty years. That defines exactly who I am – loyal, passionate, and fiery. You had a successful corporate career.
What drove you to starting your own business?
A couple of things. First and foremost, the pink slip they gave me the Monday following a glorious Thanksgiving Day Weekend. That was fun! I realized at that very moment that I had experiences, expertise, skills and talents that so many people and small businesses would love to leverage – and why does it only have to be a single corporation? Why not many? So, I established my first business, The Boas Group, which is a pure business consultancy practice, leveraging those 25 years of corporate experiences.
What’s your book “Shedding the Corporate Bitch” about?
Shedding the Corporate Bitch is my first book, which I wrote as an apology to the road kill I left behind in my life as a result of the negative mindset, angst, attitude, fear and insecurity that consumed me, and which I masked behind a persona of a bitch for many years. It traces my transformation from a sassy, precocious, and fun-loving young girl, into a nasty woman, who thought that in order to be successful, and achieve the power, position and money I wanted, I had to a bitch. It concludes after the initial stages of my shedding process into the strong, empowered woman I am today.
What is “Ball of Fire”?
If it is the saying ‘ball of fire’, then, it is how people often describe me; as a ball of fire. Being the middle of twelve children, I have a tendency to be loud, rambunctious, and fiery in spirit. If it is my company name, Ball of Fire, Inc., there wasn’t a more appropriate name for my second business, established as a result of the book and the brand that was created from it; Shedding the Bitch™. Shedding the Bitch addresses all of the many angst, attitudes, fears and negative mindsets that consume men and women, and prevent them from realizing the riches in life; whether it was due to an ugly divorce, bad relationship, challenge raising kids, coming out of the closet, being too fat or too skinny, dealing with an illness or ailment, going through menopause, or a number of other subjects people have brought to us, having resonated with my story.
Could you tell us more about your radio show and what’s the thought behind it?
Shedding the Bitch Radio started as a way to develop the brand, and as a vehicle to inspire, educate and motivate as many people as possible. The topics, experts and messages are all focused on helping women and men to discover, confront and shed the bitches that consume them, so they can create and accelerate the riches they want in life. It has been a great platform for me, my book and my brand, as much as it is for the expert guests I bring on, and ultimately our listeners who are wanting to live a full rich life. And it is a blast to hear from listeners about their own experiences of challenge and triumph.
Can you tell us about your upcoming projects or initiatives?
Currently, it is all about PR and media relations around the book’s formal in store publish date, which is August 1. However, it is available now on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other online sites (including our own) and E-readers. We are hitting the radio, television, print and internet scene pretty hard, with the story, as well planning our Shedding the Bitch Parties and Book Signings in various cities around the country, and seeking speaking engagements to drive out the movement.
All the while we are also collecting stories from readers and followers regarding their own shedding transformation, which will be published in our next book, Shedding the Bitch, planned for an early 2012 release. It will be a compilation of 60-70 stories about a variety of life challenges men and women have been able to discover, confront and shed from their lives. The stories we have received to date are inspiring. I cannot wait for people to read them.
Any advice for those young and aggressive corporate achievers?
One core one: before it backfires on you, because it will, be who you really are and seek out the mentors, coaches, peers and managers who see YOU for all that you have to offer. Be open to allowing them to guide you, coach and instruct you, as well as constructively criticize you, on what you can do to leverage your own self worth, confidence, power, skill and talents to achieve the success you want. If you lack specific skills and talents that allow you to excel, get it. You do not have to ‘man up’ or fall prey to the aggressors in your work place to achieve success. Just be you.
Would you like to add something, Bernadette?
This is going to make me sound really old, but I have to say it…and please forgive me if I sound preachy. Each one of us only get one life to live, and that one life flashes by in what seems to be milliseconds. Don’t waste one second, one minute, one hour, day or year buried in fear, insecurity, doubt, lack of self worth, or with a negative belief system – though it may seem impossible to ever shed yourself of it. Know that you deserve a full, rich life, and go seek out the help and support you need to move beyond it. You will thank yourself over and over again for doing it. Push through the fear, you are worth it!
Thank you Bernadette.
