College Freshman At 66!

Alice Carleton, a Dancer, Singer, Author, Poetess, Vietnam era Veteran, Student and an Advocate for the Abused, wrote about her life of overcoming (and thriving) and won a scholarship; and now a freshman in college at age 66! She has been working like a “Trojan” for over 10 years to get the message out there regarding verbal abuse.  She has also written a paper, Society’s Hidden Pandemic: Verbal Abuse; Precursor to Physical Violence and a Form of Biochemical Assault.

Interview by Stephen Thompson, Ph.D.

Why and how did you get involved with the topic of “verbal abuse”?

I got involved in the verbal abuse topic, because I grew up with it and then endured it in a 31 year “marriage”.  It took me 25 years to find the (answer) as to what was happening to me: The Verbally Abusive Relationship by Patricia Evans. Her book saved my sanity and life. I began a crusade to speak to as many people as would listen and that was 15 years ago.

Talk to us about your Michigan Counseling Association invite and experiance.

I gave a lengthy speech and presentation at the Michigan Counseling Association recently. I did not realize that I would be physically and emotionally exhausted. Perhaps it is because I was speaking of my whole life. I read a few of my poems regarding abuse, also. It was a powerful, wonderful and very scary situation, but I felt/feel driven to make a difference.

What is “Sanctuary of the Soul” all about?

Sanctuary of the Soul is my poetry book (poems of anguish, healing, hope, comfort and celebration).  For others, it is simply a book. For me, my “soul” is contained in those pages; a lifetime of mourning. My endorsements are like precious jewels.

Tell us about your college freshman experience at 66.

My college freshman experience is fun, frustrating, scary and anxiety producing, but I keep up with my fellow students, and always make a new friend/friends in every new class I attend.

Any upcoming projects or initiatives you would like to mention.

Upcoming projects or initiatives:  The same as for the past 15 years… to continue to write to the media so that I can use my voice for those who have no voice… the ones living behind closed doors in silence, fear and shame. My goal: National Television.

What are your leisure time activities?

My “leisure time activities”, music, dancing, singing, reading, writing and old movies.

Thank you.
