Welcome to OpenBeast. Tell us about yourself?
Hello! Thank You! I’m so grateful to be a part of OpenBeast (smiles). I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri and I’m so proud to be from this amazing city. I’m the host of “Show Me St. Louis” at 12:30pm (central time) on KSDK-TV, an NBC Affiliate. I’m also a reporter for the show, which means I shoot, write and edit my own stories too! It keeps me pretty busy because I report 5 days a week along with hosting 5 days a week. But I’m not complaining! I’m grateful. I absolutely LOVE my job and I feel so blessed to be working at KSDK. On the weekends I also work part time as a DJ on 106.5 The Arch. I’m also a HUGE dog lover & animal advocate! I have 5 dogs (3 Shepherd Mixes, a Dachshund/Corgi and a Lhasa Apso) and they are the sweetest, most wonderful creatures in the world. They are my heart. I tried to foster dogs at one point but I ended up adopting them! These days I help dogs in need by volunteering each week at 2 different dog shelters, “Stray Rescue” and the “Gateway Pet Guardians”. I get to feed them, walk them, & of course give them lots of pets.
How did you get into the radio business?
My very first radio gig was as a traffic reporter. I wasn’t on the air at first. My job was to listen to police scanners for traffic accidents so someone else could report it. The way I got that job was pretty funny. I worked at “Ozzie’s Restaurant and Sports Bar” (owned by the baseball legend, Ozzie Smith) when it was in Westport Plaza in St. Louis. They asked a couple of the cocktail waitresses to go to a Gateway Grizzlies baseball game and hand out flyers. I saw this guy broadcasting for KSLQ radio and I went up to him and said “hey, I want to be on the radio! I’d be so good at it”. He said if I called him every day for a week telling him why I wanted to be in the radio business, he’d find a job for me. So I did! But I called him 3 times a day for 3 days until he said “Fine, I’ll give you a job, stop calling me so much!” I think the words he used to describe me was a “Nice Pest”. J
What do you consider your greatest success thus far?
Becoming the host of Show Me St. Louis is definitely my greatest success so far! It has always been a dream of mine to work for this show. When Show Me St. Louis began 17 years ago I used to come home from high school and watch it on TV and just dream of working for the show some day! I even got a tour of KSDK when I was a kid and thought it was the coolest place. I was right! I look around before each show and I still can’t believe I get to sit in the hosting chair each day. I am living my dream and it is even cooler then I imagined. I have been so blessed and I definitely don’t take it for granted. I Love Show Me St. Louis!
Who do you count as your mentor(s)?
I feel lucky to have a lot of mentors in my life. Its kind of like the Buddhist saying “when the student is ready the teacher will appear”. Mike Bush at KSDK is one of my favorite writers of all time so I study his amazing work and I’ve talked with him about his writing process. Wendy Erikson was the former host of Show Me and I learned so much from her about being a Host. The people I work by every day in the Show Me St. Louis office (Stephanie Zoller-Senior Producer, Jim Viehman-Photographer/Editor, Coreen Savitski-Reporter) are all so talented and I constantly learn from them to get better at my craft. My parents are non-stop Life Teachers for me too. I really value their opinions and advice whether it has to do with my career or just general life advice.
Tell us something about you most people don’t know?
Although I’m on the radio, when I’m in my car I don’t listen to the radio very often. I do sometimes but mostly I love listening to audio books. I’m kind of addicted to self-help books about positive thinking and inspiration! My favorite authors are Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, Marianne Williamson or the book “The Secret”. Sometimes I also listen to sermons through an app on my iphone. One of my favorite people is Bishop TD Jakes, he’ll leave you feeling inspired every time!
Any upcoming projects or initiatives you would like to discuss?
My goals are mostly to keep up the high standards for Show Me St. Louis. I also continue to Emcee a number of charitable events because I love to give back. Plus, I like to remind people that you can find the most Amazing dogs in rescue groups & shelters. These days there are more dogs then people who want them so if you want a specific breed, look for a rescue group. Those dogs know you gave them a second chance at life and will repay you with a lifetime of love and loyalty.
If you could have a different career, what would it be?
If I could have another career I’d work at the zoo! I’d love to be a zookeeper with the elephants. I think they are so cute and sweet and I’d have one as a pet if they didn’t weigh 10,000 pounds. Or I’d be an animal trainer in the dolphin show at Sea World, that always looks like so much fun. I’ve yet to swim with the dolphins on any vacations but it’s definitely on my list of things I want to do some day!
I am still complled to ask this. Dogs or cats?
Hmmm, let me think about this one, DOGS! I think cats are adorable but I’m allergic to them!
