Interview by Stephen Thompson, Ph.D.
Welcome to OpenBeast. Tell us about yourself.
Wow! Lots to tell (smiles). Here is an abbreviated version (or we’ll be here forever). I am first and foremost an actress. It is my great passion. I enjoy bringing life, humanity, empathy, conflict and humor to characters. When not acting, I work as red carpet host, and model for movie studios, videogame companies and other artists. I studied at The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute and am now teaching my own classes at the school.
How did you get into the world of showbiz?
I grew up on the east coast with west coast dreams. Hollywood beckoned me at a very young age. I enjoyed a lovely childhood with summers spent on Martha’s Vineyard. I was always performing with my brothers-anything we could create-music, magic, and puppet shows, and backyard plays for the neighbors. In college I was sucked like a vacuum into the world of journalism. I went as far as interning on Capitol Hill, which fortuitously led me to scoring some interviews on the White House lawn. But my earlier dramatic impulses pulled at me, and to everyone’s surprise. I dropped my budding journalism career and hopped a plane to LA. I immediately started my acting training and booking jobs in commercials and roles on TV.
Talk to us about your own one-woman show “Sugar Happens”.
“Sugar Happens” has been the most fulfilling acting experience yet! I was fortunate to perform the show for five years both in Los Angeles and in New York City. It is an hour play, written by Emmy award winning writer Sherry Coben. Although based on my true experiences, it veers-off into three different possibilities of how my future “might” turnout. The play has a beautiful message about the simple acceptance and gratitude for one’s own life despite our hopes, dreams and plans for that life. I play four characters, all which possess pathos, cutting humor and hope. Performing solo provides me the opportunity to connect directly with an audience and is fulfilling.
What is “The Vamps Next Door” all about?
“The Vamps Next Door” is a wacky fun web sitcom about a modern day Vampire family. I play Beverly Tepes. My character is a fairly inexperienced Vampire and would rather fit in with human society then bite them. She has a big heart and loves her family so much that she covertly feeds them from the blood bank at the local hospital where she works as a nurse. Phil Ramuno and Laura Van Scotter created the show. The cast is wonderful and features many disabled actors. We hope to sell the show to a TV or Cable network soon.
So how Rachel Bailit did develop interest in being a journalist?
I developed an interest in journalism because I love to interview people. I am a very curious person and believe that there are many layers to any human being or story. I am intuitive and listen very well. A skill that is helpful in acting. I also enjoy being in the center of activity. News is in the here and now. I like the excitement and the rush of adrenaline. I also hope that I can reveal truth, bring about justice, and help educate and interest people.
Any upcoming projects or initiatives you would like to discuss?
I have just finished filming episode four of my web series “Diary of an Actress”. It’s the only project that I can truly call my own. Although I have a talented director and editor, I produce, conceptualize, write and act in the episodes. I love the freedom to create from my imagination or experiences without any limits. It’s challenging to remain true to the original intention of my blog, which is based on sharing truth and optimism about my life as an actress.
What would you consider as your one best achievement thus far?
Having the courage to come out to Hollywood and pursue my dreams. I had a vision, which was intangible, one which no one could visualize but me. I boarded the plane with a one-way ticket and a trunk. I had to start my life from scratch and figure out this puzzle of a town. I haven’t got all the answers yet but I’m still a believer and I still trust that I am here for a reason that might make a positive impact on the world.
How do you get inspired?
I find inspiration in just about anything! I start my day discovering a new song, an interesting news story, a fascinating Facebook post, a beautiful tree I pass walking, pictures in fashion magazines, observing people, watching movies from all over the world, working with children, trying new foods, reading about other actors, and always staying open to the “new”.
What are your leisure time activities?
I am a family oriented person and also enjoy my friends, movies, fashion and art. I am constantly seeking adventures. I’m not one to sit around. I squeeze every moment I can out of life!
